MS Environmental provide technical data and methodology statements to support evidence at Public Inquiry. We regularly review photography and visualisation work to assess the accuracy of the work submitted, and we also act as expert witness.
Mike Spence is a Chartered Landscape Architect, Registered EIA Practitioner and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society with over 29 years professional experience. Mike has worked for both developers and local authorities, the National Trust and Kew Gardens, on a wide range of Public Inquiries which include tower blocks, large and small scale housing schemes, leisure, infrastructure and electricity generation projects.
Recent schemes include sites in London, Oxfordshire, North Yorkshire and the Lake District.
Since 2013 Mike has acted as technical advisor to the Landscape Institute's Technical Committee, providing expertise in photography and photomontage in LVIA. Mike regularly runs peer group masterclass training sessions covering technical photography in LVIA, and has given a paper on 'Verified Photomontages' at an international conference in Helsinki. Mike is also a member of IEMA's Impact Assessment Steering Group.
Mike, a former rugby captain at Nottingham University, is a keen athlete and has undertaken a number of marathons in recent years. In 2017 he accompanied his friend Richard, who is blind, around the Manchester Marathon, and ran as part of the Manchester University alumni Purple Wave alongside his old friend who was running with a mechanical heart valve. In September 2018 Mike accompanied a group of mechanical heart valve runners in a run through Milan.
Away from work Mike likes to unwind by climbing mountains in the Lakeland Fells, walking in Northumberland, gardening and spending time with family.
Greg Selman BEng(Hons) is our 3D modelling expert, with extensive experience of a vast range of 3D modelling packages and render engines.
His background in electronic engineering, climbing, rock guitar and computer scripting blends with unrivalled technical ability.
When not in the office Greg can be found on the face of a mountain, on stage or paragliding through the air. Greg completed the York Marathon in October 2021.
Oliver MacWhirter is our Creative Designer. Oliver has a degree in Interior Architecture and has plenty of Revit and AutoDesk experience, as well as thorough knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite.
Oliver is passionate about all sports and particularly enjoys football, plays twice a week, and supports Liverpool football club. He is also an extremely keen skier and is often found in the alps trying to find the steepest piste. Oliver currently has 9 chickens, plenty of eggs, and one hungry cat.
Kieran Thompson BA(Hons) is an architect whom Mike has known since birth.
Kieran completed a Master’s Degree in Architecture at Manchester University and spent 2 years working for IBI Group. In the past Kieran has helped out with 3D Modelling, InDesign and Photoshop as required.
Kieran regularly runs VIP packages at music festivals. If you want to know anything about Bradford City FC, Kieran is your man.
Sam Shepherd is our technical photographer. Graduating in Photography BA(Hons) from Huddersfield in 2021, Sam is of course a big fan of the Yorkshire tea available in the office 24/7.
When Sam is not taking highly technical photographs he can be found cycling and hiking in the hills of the Pennines. Sam has his competitive eyes set on long distance cycle events across the UK such as the Fred Whitton Challenge and the Badlands race in Spain.
Luke Robertson BEng (Hons) Msc Luke is a multidisciplinary creative designer who started his career in aerospace engineering moving then into the creative design field and then into sustainable architecture. Lukes breadth of experience in technical and creative capacities is reflected in the scope of work that MSEnvironmental undertakes.
When not working deeply in photoshop on technical renders, Luke can be found digging, planting or harvesting plants on his small holding or designing experimental food production systems. Luke is a family man with a wife, two young sons, one dog, cat, chickens and several hundred fish!
Sophie Spence BA(Hons) graduated from Newcastle University and has been working for Grey as an Advertising Account Manager. Sophie has supported Mike with marketing, editing and digital mapping. Sophie has helped put together workshop presentations and recently accompanied Mike to deliver a paper in Helsinki.
Sophie is a keen paraglider and white knuckle rider.
Holly Spence is a budding mechanical engineer currently studying at Sheffield University, Holly is a talented drummer in an rock band and maintains a balanced approach to life, enjoying rock climbing and playing the acoustic guitar while studying. Holly has supported in areas of photography and GIS work.
Cameron Spence is a physicist and software developer who recently gained a Doctorate in Quantum Computing and Solid State Physics from Universite Grenoble Alpes. Cameron has been helping for many years in all areas of work, but most recently has taken over the website management.
Juliet Brown graduated from Liverpool University in Geography (BSc) in 2018 and in Environmental Science (MSc) in 2019. She is our resident Flood Risk specialist, with experience in investigating the impacts of flooding on infrastructure and developing long-term flood records. She supports Mike and Greg across the full range of visualisation and GIS services.
Juliet lives near the historic home of the Bronte Sisters and is a keen hiker in her local area. In her spare time she enjoys ballroom dancing, playing the piano and singing in a choir, whilst volunteering at her local cinema. She is also ABBA's number 1 fan.
Olle Romo is our technical support, providing valuable knowledge in the world of website construction and management.
Olle has a history in music production and toured the world as a drummer.
Snowball is the office cat. She has been a full time office cat for the past 13 years. She has a history of keeping the office clear of all mice and able to calm members of staff with her affection. She has taken part in many zoom meetings and even appeared in a recent Public Inquiry.
JJ (Jean-Jacques) is the office tortoise and part time philosopher. JJ is only a few months old and has several hundred years ahead of him. He doesnt show much emotion but is faster than most tortoises. His hobbies include hibernating, scratching and blueberries.
